Wines from Austria
May 15, 2013 | Permanent Link Austrian WinesFrom now through June 9, Austrian wines will be toasted throughout the United States, as the Austrian Trade Commission encourages wine sellers to celebrate the rich history of Austrian wine.

If you’ve always thought of Austria as simply a place where people chug back beer steins to wash down sausage and wiener schnitzel, you may be surprised to learn that Austria is actually a strong producer of high-quality wines.

White wines make up the bulk of production in Austria, with reds only making up 30 percent of production.

Of those, the country is best known for white wines produced from the Grüner Veltliner grape. Grown along the Danube on slopes so steep that they can barely hold any soil, these wines are dry, spicy and minerally, and make up about one-third of all of the wine produced in Austria.

For years, Grüner Veltliners were obscure in the United States, but lately, they’ve become popular among American somaliers, who praise them for their fantastic pairing abilities. According to Food & Wine Magazine, Grüner Veltliners are refreshing, medium-bodied, and peppery, making them a great compliment to everything from green salads to cold poached salmon to roasted chicken.

Potash Market’s Sandburg Wine Cellar has several Grüner Veltliners to choose from. Try the “Lois,” a lively, spicy Grüner Veltliner with an aroma of fresh apples and citrus, exotic fruit flavors and a refreshing acidity. Or go for the Wunzerkeller Andau. This snappy, spicy white wine featuring a peppery palate combined with persimmon and kumquat flavors is on sale this week for only $9.99.

Of course, there are also other types of grape varieties grown in Austria, including Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Chardonnay, Muskateller, Traminer, Pinot Noit, Merlot, Cabernet and Syrah. Most wines come from three main winemaking regions in the country: Niederosterrich, in the northeast, which borders the Czech Republic; Burgenland, in the east, on the border with Hungary; and Steiermark, in the southeast, on the border with Slovenia.

Come try any variety of Austrian wines this week at Potash Markets’ Sandburg Wine Cellar, your neighborhood liquor store in Chicago’s Gold Coast.
